Get ready for spring. While this photo was taken in April of 2008, it will not be long before the fields of the Skagit Valley will be blossoming with bursts of color.
There is hardly a spot on Whidbey Island's coastline that doesn't have a phenomenal view. This is the view from Channel Lane, south of Oak Harbor on the east side of the island. In the foreground is navy housing on Maylor's Point. In the distance is Mt. Baker.
To the northeast is Mt. Baker. Its majesty dominates the landscape. Hills and cliffs on the east side of Whidbey Island offer breath-taking views. Mt. Baker is now the "snowiest" place on earth, setting the world record for snowfall in a single season (1,140 inches or 95 feet) in 1999.
To the south is Mt. Rainier. It is well south of Seattle so it is seen from the north part of Whidbey Island only on clear days. On this foggy morning,a fisherman heads out through Crescent Harbor.
Whidbey Island is surrounded by mountains. To the east are the Cascades. In the foreground is San deFuca, one of the earliest settlements on the island.
The view from the west side of Whidbey Island is incredible! There are days when the Olympic Mountains seem within touch. A winter coat of snow graces the peaks in this view from Libbey Beach, an Island county park.
