The spit is part of the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge on the northern edge of the Olympic Peninsula. The spit is 5.5 miles long and was built by a process called longshore drift. Waves hit diagonally and gradually move sand and rocks growing the spit 13 feet per year.
We were at the spit on July 31. The skies were clear with Mt. Baker in the distance. The view would be obscured the next day by smoke from B. C. forest fires.
