Olympic Peninsula: Dungeness Spit

The spit is part of the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge on the northern edge of the Olympic Peninsula. The spit is 5.5 miles long and was built by a process called longshore drift. Waves hit diagonally and gradually move sand and rocks growing the spit 13 feet per year.
We were at the spit on July 31. The skies were clear with Mt. Baker in the distance. The view would be obscured the next day by smoke from B. C. forest fires.

Olympic Peninsula: The Road

Sometimes it was hard to keep my eyes on the road while driving near Sequim. I love mountains and the Olympics were awesome.

Olympic Peninsula: Purple Haze

We stopped at several lavender farms and our favorite by far was Purple Haze Lavender Farm, an organic farm on Bell Bottom Road near Sequim. The yellow is helichrysum, from which oil is also extracted for (medicinal) use.
We were there the last day of July and the harvest had begun. The farm is beautiful and the staff were very friendly. You can take a virtual tour and learn all about the history of lavender (Cleopatra used it) at their website: https://purplehazelavender.com/.

Olympic Peninsula: Ferry

The four day journey my sister and I took around the Olympic Peninsula began on a beautifully clear morning with a ferry ride to Port Townsend. Little did we know that about 24 hours later this view would have been obliterated by the smoke drifting south from fires in British Columbia.
