Mt. Baker Dusk

Mt. Baker caught the glow from the setting sun. It had been foggy all day and fog still lingered above the mountain and near the ground. This view is from Broadview Elementary in Oak Harbor, Whidbey Island.

We are experiencing a temperature inversion with lots of fog.
These are the quickly changing scenes from yesterday morning.

Sailboat and Submarine

I was at Ft. Ebey State Park on the west side of Whidbey Island when this submarine heading out met two sailboats. In the distance are the Olympic Mountains.
This was the submarine approaching.
I had pointed out the submarine to this couple. The man was excited as he had been career military and never seen a submarine. Well, he said, I was army!
Several places in the state park have this kind of a view as you enjoy your picnic.
The submarine heads toward the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Pacific Ocean.

A couple take their dog for an early morning stroll at Ft. Ebey State Park, on the west side of Whidbey Island. The Olympic Mountains catch the morning sun in the distance. (Sorry for the flare - yes, I did have my lens hood on.)

Mt. Baker

I have yet to grow tired of photographing Mt. Baker. There is something about it that causes me to pause every time I see it. This view is from a housing area on the west side of Oak Harbor.

Whidbey Island Dawn

This beach on the west side of Whidbey Island is called Sunset Beach but it makes for nice sunrises too. This view is across Swan Lake out to the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
This view is to the south showing the Olympics catching the morning light.

San de Fuca View

A Whidbey Island native, I grew up in San de Fuca. I used to walk across the back of our neighbor's property to this view. The historic San de Fuca school house is at the lower right. In the distance is Camano Island. San de Fuca is on Penn Cove and was at one time supposed to be quite a pioneer settlement. The hotel is gone as are many of the other historic buildings. The post office/grocery store I remember from sixty years ago is now a pottery gallery.

Yellow Mum

A closeup of a mum in a bouquet I recently received. It was misting outside so I set the flowers out and allowed the mist to gather.

Bird Ballet

Shore birds put on an early morning ballet on the west side of Whidbey Island. I watched their perfectly timed moves for several minutes.
In the distance the Olympic Mountains catch the rising sun.

This photo was taken at dusk the same day from the west side of Oak Harbor.

Sea to Ski in the Pacific Northwest

Something that makes the Pacific Northwest so attractive is the number of outdoor activities available.  This scene from Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island shows that in just a couple of hours you could leave your sail boat and be skiing in the Cascades.

Dawn of 2013

The North Cascade Mountains from Whidbey Island on this first day of 2013. Within an half hour the ground fog had risen and obscured the mountains and the rising sun.
