Fir Island

The fog shrouded Olympics yesterday afternoon from Fir Island, Skagit Valley.
This view is from Talking Field 3 and the location of the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife's Fir Island Goose Reserve. 225 acres on the south side of Fir Island Road are owned by the state and leased to farmers to plant, providing crops for winter snow goose forage. The area is part of the Skagit River delta with Dry Slough at the east and Brown's Slough on the west. In the late 1800's, following human settlement, dikes were built and the land was converted to farm use.

Ft. Ebey State Park

One of my favorite places for a quiet morning is Ft. Ebey State Park on Whidbey Island. The views of the Olympics and the Salish Sea are amazing, such as this one from January 12.
There are trails for hiking and spaces for camping, although the camping section of the park is closed in the winter.

Winter Whidbey Drive

A morning view of a hazy Mt. Baker on January 12 from West Beach Road on Whidbey Island. I was at the same spot as yesterday's post, one of the few on the island where you can see the Olympics and Mt. Baker from the same place.
