San de Fuca Views - December 23

These are the kinds of views one has when driving around the small central Whidbey Island community of San de Fuca.
The houses on Camano Island were clearly visible, as were the snowy Cascade Mountains. Penn Cove is in the foreground.

Monroe's Landing

Monroe's Landing, on Penn Cove, was a family favorite for swimming and picnics during my childhood. The water in the cove is a bit warmer than on the west side of Whidbey Island. The Olympic Mountains are in the distance.

Monroe's Landing View

This view of Penn Cove and the Olympics from the beach at Monroe's Landing on Whidbey Island is a familiar one from my childhood. Monroe's Landing was our favorite swimming place. The water in the cove was a bit warmer than the ocean on the west side of Whidbey and was a mere bike ride from home. Scores of people enjoyed this beach on the summer days of the 1950s and 1960s. Cars lined the side of the road. Now parking is prohibited and the beach is infrequently used.

San de Fuca Dock and Penn Cove

A southwest view from the east side of San de Fuca at the end of March. San de Fuca is the little Whidbey Island community of my childhood. Land developers had big plans for this place over a century ago. At one time there was a hotel near where I took this photo.

Sailing by Mussel Rafts

Something a photographer is always thinking about is composition and format. Horizontal or vertical? Which looks best? This view was taken from Madrona Way on Whidbey Island. The mussel rafts are in Penn Cove. Mt. Baker is in the distance.

Penn Cove Mussel Farm and Mt. Baker

The rafts of the Penn Cove Mussel Farm, a mussel processing boat and the winter coat of snow on Mt. Baker. This is the kind of view one has when driving on Madrona Way between Coupeville and Oak Harbor, on Whidbey Island.

Penn Cove Muscles

On the east side of Whidbey Island is an inlet called Penn Cove. The muscle farm in the cove provides muscles known throughout the Pacific Northwest. In the distance is Mt. Baker.
