Mt. Baker

Mt. Baker and the snow covered foothills caught the late afternoon sun. Photo taken in Oak Harbor, Whidbey Island.

Mt. Baker Steam

Jets from NAS Whidbey do a practice run by Mt. Baker, which actually was letting of some steam yesterday, near the peak.

New Cascade Snow

The North Cascade Mountains with their new snow from recent Pacific storms. This view is from the west side of Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island.

Windy Oak Harbor Bay

The late afternoon sun peeking through clouds caused light and shadow patterns on the white capped bay.

Winter Storm

It's 35 degrees, the wind is blowing 45 miles per hour, and it is raining! So what does a photographer do? I was fascinated with the images on the raindrops.
Here is a closeup of all the upside down images. I like the way they are distorted, depending on the shape of the raindrop.

Sunnyside Cemetery, Coupeville

Even on a cloudy day, the historic cemetery at Coupeville (Whidbey Island) offers scenic views of the Ebey Historic Reserve.
Many of the early pioneers were buried here.
There is also a restored blockhouse. No matter the weather, there is much history to investigate here.

Windy Season

Wind is a given on Whidbey Island, as these trees bear witness. The location is Cliffside, a park at NAS Whidbey. I gave this photo a fake infrared look in Lightroom.

Cat's Eye

Our cat MJ was intent on viewing the birds at a feeder. As I looked at her, I was amazed at her eye. The distance from the cornea to the pupil is huge. I wonder what it would be like to see through a cat's eye...

Autumn Colors

This rainbow of autumn colors was a scene on a recent morning walk.

Whidbey Island Sunset

A recent sunset from the west side of Whidbey Island. I was surprised to see a Washington State ferry on the horizon, heading south. That is not a regular run of the ferry system so the ferry must have been going to a new route, or to dry dock. The outline of the Olympic Mountains is barely visible.

Mt. Baker

After a month of rain, it is good to see my favorite mountain again.
Even though we had frost this morning, the air is not clear. I long for the crisp, clear days.

New Snow on Mt. Baker

What a difference a week makes.  Storms have rolled in and Mt. Baker has its new coat of snow.  It was only a week ago that it looked so baren.  See that photo here.

It is that time of the year again when spiders are visible in abundance.

Cascade Mountain Weather

The clouds rolled in from the west, heading toward the Cascade Mountains.  There would finally be new snow on them.  This was the view yesterday from the west side of Oak Harbor.
Meanwhile, a faint view of Mt. Rainer could be seen to the south.

Mt. Baker's Meager Snow

A record dry spell for the Pacific Northwest has just ended.  Yes, it is finally raining today.  I took this photo of Mt. Baker a few days ago.  It shows the least amount of snow cover I can ever remember seeing.

Cascade Sunrise

The smoke from eastern Washington fires continues to cause beautiful sunrises over the North Cascade Mountains, seen here from Oak Harbor, Whidbey Island.
This was about a half hour before sunrise.  A stable high pressure system over Puget Sound made Oak Harbor Bay like glass this morning.

October Sunrise from Whidbey Island

Even though we've had some wind, there is still haze and extra moisture in the air.
The sun rose just five degrees south of due east.
This was the view about a half hour before sunrise.  After weeks of haze from the fires in eastern Washington, it is good to see the Cascades again.

Hazy Sunrise

The haze from the eastern Washington fires continue to cause awesome sunrises.  The top photo shows the sun rising over a foothill barely visible.  The bottom photo was taken before the sunrise, showing the thick layer of smoke.

Hazy Sunset from Whidbey Island

We have had a high pressure system over the Pacific Northwest, unusual for this time of the year.  The still air, combined with the smoke from eastern Washington fires, makes for a colorful sunset.  When I arrived at Joseph Whidbey State Park, the sea was still.

It was almost impossible to catch the unusual colors as the sun sank through the hazy sky.

There were many wandering the beach, hardly able to take their eyes off the sunset.

The image of the sun was distorted as it neared the horizon.

A very unusual sunset for Whidbey Island.
