Hazy Sunrise

The haze from the eastern Washington fires continue to cause awesome sunrises.  The top photo shows the sun rising over a foothill barely visible.  The bottom photo was taken before the sunrise, showing the thick layer of smoke.

Hazy Sunset from Whidbey Island

We have had a high pressure system over the Pacific Northwest, unusual for this time of the year.  The still air, combined with the smoke from eastern Washington fires, makes for a colorful sunset.  When I arrived at Joseph Whidbey State Park, the sea was still.

It was almost impossible to catch the unusual colors as the sun sank through the hazy sky.

There were many wandering the beach, hardly able to take their eyes off the sunset.

The image of the sun was distorted as it neared the horizon.

A very unusual sunset for Whidbey Island.

Hazy Sunrise

This photo was taken 50 minutes after sunrise, yesterday.  The haze from fires in eastern Washington created the unusual color.
The "false sun" is because I took the photo through a window.  I left it in as it shows the sun without the glare.

Zinnia

The very heavy fog this morning left lots of water on the few remaining zinnias in the garden.

Pine White Butterfly

Update: Thanks Larry M. for the identification as a pine white!  You can find out more about it here.  They will need to change the "range" of this butterfly as I saw this one, and many others, on Whidbey Island.  This butterfly is now in northwest coastal forests.

Original post:
I tried to identify this butterfly online but the task is daunting.  Anyone know what this is?  I caught this a couple of weeks ago on the Maylor Point walk.

Snag on Fidalgo Island

This picturesque dead tree is near the summit of the peninsula known as Washington Park on Fidalgo Island.  The park is a short drive from Anacortes.  One can drive to this location or hike the paved roads.

Goose Rock, Whidbey Island

Goose Rock is part of Deception Pass State Park at the northern tip of Whidbey Island.  Climbing up to the 400 foot summit may be a stretch for some, but the views are worth it.  The haze was not noticeable to the northwest but was very evident to the south.

Mt. Erie Views

Views from a recent trip to the top of Mt. Erie on Fidalgo Island.  The haze was intense so the far off mountains were not visible.

Blue Moon Rising

This was the moonrise August 31 over the First Reformed Church, Oak Harbor, WA.  Since it was the second full moon in the same month, it is known as a "blue moon."
