This was the view from the west side of Whidbey Island recently. The sun is setting over the southern tip of Vancouver Island.
Some days it is just fun to experiment with glass.
This is one of those fun experiments to try. Set your camera to 1/15 of a second, then pan up as you take the photo.
A recent sunset from the west side of Whidbey Island. The San Juan Islands are on the horizon to the right and Smith Island is at the left.
Every year, around the end of August through the middle of September, these moths are in the area, especially at the lavender.
They are fast, as can be seen by this photo with a shutter speed of 1/100 second.
A lone fishing boat heads out to sea with the Olympics as the backdrop.
I was struck by these flowers gone to seed.
The automated lighthouse on Smith Island guides a fisherman home. My parents would tell stories of when a family lived on this island to maintain the lighthouse. Their school aged children would have to row to Whidbey Island to attend school.
This was the moonrise last night.
This is another of my collection as I wander around finding interesting windows. This one is in a building in La Conner.
I know, the calendar says it is still summer but the weather yesterday made it feel like winter had already come. There are business people downtown creating office pools, betting on when we will see the Cascades again. This is why people who need sunshine to have a good day do not live in the Pacific Northwest.
This is a copy of a film print from years ago. It won't be long and the autumn colors will be like this at Heather Meadows, at the Mt. Baker ski area.
This view of Mt. Baker is from the west side of Oak Harbor Bay. Maylor's Point, with Navy housing, is in the foreground.
This was the view a few days ago from the beach on the west side of Whidbey Island. The sun had set over the southern tip of Vancouver Island.
This is one of my favorite views of Oak Harbor and Mt. Baker.
I do enjoy taking photos of windows. This one is on a building just a block from the downtown business area of Oak Harbor and across the street from the post office.
Before the Deception Pass Bridge was built, a small ferry went from Hoypus Point (on the right) on Whidbey Island to Yokeko Point (on the left) on Fidalgo Island.
Although that was before my time, I remember my parents reminiscing about the ferry rides. Mt. Baker is in the distance.
This is a recent view of the San Juan Islands at dusk from the west side of Whidbey Island.
There was fog last night on
the west side of Whidbey
Island so I went to another
favorite spot of mine, the
upper parking lot of the
Sno-Isle Library.
Now the moon was to the
left of Venus.
It did not take long before
the fog rose even higher
and covered the view of
the Olympics.
The crescent moon set over the fog shrouded Olympic Mountains last night. This was the view at 8:10 pm. Notice Venus in the upper left of the top photo. Tonight the moon will be much closer to Venus and should make for an awesome view. You may want to go out to the west side of Whidbey Island about 8 pm and see something that does not happen very often.
The Olympic Mountains from the west side of Whidbey Island last night, just after sunset.
We had quite a storm last night. The lightning and thunder is unusual for the pacific North-
west. It lasted for several hours and also brought heavy rain.
I took about 300 ten second exposures to get around a dozen images of the lightning.
This one did a
u-turn.
The odd lighting in the sky earlier was an indication that something was coming. Notice the rainbow at the right of this image.
There were several fishing last night along the West Beach shore of Whidbey Island.
This was the view a few minutes earlier as fishing boats headed home.
The sun set at 281 degrees, just over the southern tip of Vancouver Island.
As the last light was fading, the lighthouse on Smith Island began to give warning to those still on the Salish Sea.
I had seen this window on an abandoned building earlier in the day. I went back near sunset to get this image.
One of my favorite ways to take photos of flowers is with back lighting. Compare this photo to the one below.
Granted, these are different sunflowers but I think the difference in lighting is worth the effort.
After what seems like an endless summer of sunny days, we have a cloudy Labor Day. Rain during the night cleared the air but increased the humidity, seen in the mist near the Cascade foothills.
The Freund Marsh Trail is a nice stroll among trees and bushes imitating the natural habitat of the area. It connects to Windjammer Park so there is easy access from downtown Oak Harbor.
