Fort Allen Park, Portland, Maine

We walked along the Eastern Promenade to Fort Allen Park. It was established in 1775 by Patriots in Portland. It was named for Colonel Ethan Allen.  The Fort was important during the War of 1812 as its high position would allow firing upon any British ships entering the harbor. The park has memorials to the Civil War, the USS Portland, the USS Maine, the Vietnam War and September 11. The cannon shown was recovered from the USS Maine. In the distance is Fort Gorges, built 1858-1864. No battles were fought there.
