The mission dates from 1720 but it was not until 1768 that work began on the limestone church. Worship is still held in the church and on this day, a wedding.
About thirty percent of the mission is original work while the rest was reconstructed by the WPA in the 1930s.
At the peak of the mission's development in the 1770s, there were 350 Indians residing in 84 two room apartments.
Stone walls surrounded the mission, protection from Comanche and Apache raids.
