A high tide and 60 mph southerly winds early on March 10 left their marks on Windjammer Park in Oak Harbor.

September Lightning Views

We had quite a storm last night. The lightning and thunder is unusual for the pacific North-
west. It lasted for several hours and also brought heavy rain.

I took about 300 ten second exposures to get around a dozen images of the lightning.

This one did a
u-turn.

The odd lighting in the sky earlier was an indication that something was coming. Notice the rainbow at the right of this image.

Stormy Salish Sea

The strong west wind provided enjoyment for these fellows. This view was looking north from the west side of Whidbey Island.

This was the view to the southwest, with the Olympics in the distance.

Rare Pacific Northwest Lightning

It is rare that we have thunder and lightning over Whidbey Island, perhaps every few years.  When I heard the loud rumble, I grabbed my camera and stationed myself at a window.  I focused manually for distance, set the shutter speed for eight seconds, then hand held the camera and waited.  Out of some 50 shots, I caught the lightning twice.

I am sure the purple color cast is an odd white balance - but I like it!

Winter Storm on Whidbey

The winter storms on Whidbey are usually high winds.  On this day we had gusts around 50 mph.  Whidbey Islanders love these days.  I went to three beaches and there were braves souls on each one, enjoying a stimulating walk on the shore.

Stormy Winter Day

A storm blew through on December 30.  Gusts on the west side of Whidbey island were around 45 m.p.h.  This view is from Libbey Beach, an Island County park, looking south to the Olympics.

Stormy Salish Sea

I drove over to the Coupeville (Keystone) ferry dock, hoping to get a shot of the new ferry servicing the run.  The ferry run had been cancelled due to the high winds.  I watched a tug and barge, marking its progress against a near piling.  They literally went backwards, driven by the strong wind.  Then this freighter appeared.  Unlike the tug, the freighter was going with the wind and made great progress in the choppy sea.
