Sunset Waves

Clouds on the horizon March 30 created a muted sunset, seen from Whidbey Island.

Skagit Valley Daffodils

The daffodils are in full bloom in Skagit Valley but the tulips have yet to show any color.

Stormy Sunset

Last night's sunset from the west side of Whidbey Island was an adventure. The wind was gusting over 40 mph. Take a photo, clean the sea foam off the lens, take a photo...

A Day in the Life of Baker

Photos of Mt. Baker from just after sunrise to near sunset on one day.
While three of the photos are from Oak Harbor, the last is from the entrance to Rocky Point. The photos were taken within a 24 hour time period.

First Tulip of 2017

My first tulip is always an early yellow but I have a red not far behind.

Life is Like a Garry Oak

I sometimes think life is like this garry oak I drive past frequently, full of twists and turns. This street in Oak Harbor is lined with the trees.

Daffodils in Skagit County

The daffodils are blooming in Skagit Valley.
I noticed many workers cutting the flowers as I drove through the fields a few days ago.
This last photo was an early morning view from the same location as the afternoon view above.

Oso Landslide Scar

The scar of the deadly Oso landslide is still very visible, three years after the event.

Whitehorse Mountain

Whitehorse Mountain from Highway 530 as we were driving east toward Oso.
The southern ridge of Round Mountain, just east of the Oso landslide. We were there on March 19, just a few days before the anniversary of the slide.

Snoqualmie Falls Upper Observation Area

The falls were roaring when we were there Sunday, March 19. The parking lots were over flowing with lines of cars waiting for a spot. Next time - mid-week, for sure.

Snoqualmie Falls Lower Observation Deck

This location for observing the falls was not as busy as the upper location, near the lodge. The new parking lot was far from full. There is a bit of a trek along a wet boardwalk and steps to get to the observation deck. I liked the view better than from the top. The turn off the highway is not marked so you'll have to do your planning ahead of time to find it easily.

Historic Smith Farm on Central Whidbey

The Olympics provide a background for the historic Smith Farm on Ebey's Prairie, Whidbey Island. The barn, thought to have been built in the 1880s, recently burned to the ground.

Crocus

I had no idea the stigma of the crocus was so feathered until I took this close-up.

Winter Beach Walking

Walking the beaches of Whidbey Island is an adventure in beauty, no matter the season. I was at Ft. Ebey State Park March 16 for this view.

Signs of Spring

It's been a grey and wet March, exceeding our average rainfall in the first half of it. It was good to see some color in an Oak Harbor city park.

Grey Day Surprises

It was a grey overcast day yesterday but a trip to the Sno-Isle Library in Oak Harbor yielded a glimpse of the snow clad Olympics. A few moments later and this view was gone.

Noble Fir

I apparently did not follow in my father's footsteps, a logger in the Cascades and owner of a sawmill. I had to look at a Mac's Field Guide to identify this tree. At least I think it's a noble fir...

If looks could kill

The resident eagle at Sunset Beach was not happy having to share the perch. He did eventually get the pole to himself.

Mammatus Clouds

The mamma clouds were short lived over Oak Harbor this morning. Most clouds form in rising air while these form in dropping air.

Winter at Ft. Ebey State Park

A frosty February morning at the state park on Whidbey Island. The camping area is closed for the winter but there are still great views of the Olympics and many bluff trails to hike.
