Mt. Baker

The view today of Mt. Baker and Maylor's Point from Channel Lane. Maylor's Point is part of NAS Whidbey Island and has military housing.

Oak Harbor Dawn

My favorite view at dawn, Oak Harbor, the bay and marina and the Cascade Mountains. June 24, 2017.

June Sunrise

The sun rising this morning just south of Mt. Baker. I was in Oak Harbor for this view.

Mountain View

My view of Mt. Baker and Maylor's Point this morning while watering a friend's flowers. A day or two of sunshine and already the view was hazy.

Old Breton Prayer

"O, God, Thy sea is so great and my boat is so small." This view of the Salish Sea and Olympic Peninsula from Ft. Ebey State Park reminds me of that prayer.

Mt. Rainier from Oak Harbor

Mt. Rainier was clearly visible from Oak Harbor yesterday, 6/19/2017. I was at Flintstone Park on Oak Harbor Bay for this view of the mountain.

A Free Meal

I'd seen where some of my plant starts had been eaten to the ground. The mystery was solved this afternoon. This second photo is showing within a fenced yard with only a gate open. And I live in Oak Harbor, just a block from a grade school, surrounded by other houses.

Ebey Bluff Trail

A great hike to take on a Sunday afternoon is the 3.5 mile Ebey Bluff Trail on Central Whidbey Island.
One can park at Ebey's Landing (Discover Pass required) and trek west along the bluff, climbing 364 feet in elevation.
The trail continues above Perego's Lake, then down the bluff to the beach. One can return to the parking lot via the beach, completing the loop.
The views are amazing and almost continuous, including the Olympic Peninsula (seen here), Mt. Baker, the Cascades, and on a really clear day, Mt. Rainier.

Red Admiral Butterfly

I saw this red admiral on my walk the other day. It seems like I saw more butterflies in the Pacific Northwest when growing up. I do miss them.

Tall Ships at Fort Casey

The Hawaiian Chieftain fires on the Lady Washington on June 13 at Fort Casey. The tall ships passed through Admiralty Inlet as part of the celebration of the 225th anniversary of Vancouver exploring Puget Sound in June of 1792.
There was a good crowd at the park to watch the ships put on their show.
The Lady Washington even fired on the Coupeville-Port Townsend ferry.
The ships continued south to Tacoma to be part of the 2017 Festival of Sail. You can see a list of the ships invited at http://festofsailtacoma.com/ships/. The red sailed Thane is at the center of the group above. Other ships invited include the Cutty Sark and Coupeville's very own Schooner Suva.

Monroe's Landing View

This view of Penn Cove and the Olympics from the beach at Monroe's Landing on Whidbey Island is a familiar one from my childhood. Monroe's Landing was our favorite swimming place. The water in the cove was a bit warmer than the ocean on the west side of Whidbey and was a mere bike ride from home. Scores of people enjoyed this beach on the summer days of the 1950s and 1960s. Cars lined the side of the road. Now parking is prohibited and the beach is infrequently used.

Oak Harbor Dawn

An unusual sunrise from August 2016. (I'm still going through old photos I have filed away and processing them.)

Ebey Prairie Then and Now

The historic Smith Farm on Whidbey Island at the end of February, 2016.
The same farm at the end of May, 2017.
Another photo from February, 2016 from a little farther away. The historic barn burned down this spring. I am going through my "to work on" file, getting to some photos I have never processed and posted.

Flower

I've been seeing this interesting flower on my daily walks. Any idea what it is? I know it is not native to Whidbey Island.

Oak Harbor Marina

Boats in the Oak Harbor Marina catch the morning light on May 26. I was in Flintstone Park on Oak Harbor Bay.

Cloud Art

Sometimes the clouds just amaze me, as in this view to the north on June 2.

USS Nimitz

The USS Nimitz passed by Fort Casey State Park on its way to the Pacific June 1.
Notice the sailboat in front of the Nimitz. You can also spot one jet at the rear of the flight deck. I was at Ft. Ebey State Park for this later photo.
