It is rare that Mt. Rainier is visible from Oak Harbor on a cloudy day, especially with such clarity. I was at Flintstone Park on Oak Harbor Bay earlier this year for this view.

Space Needle View

Watching the Seahawks beat the Packers at Century Link inspired me to finally post this view from the Space Needle, taken in August.

Mt. Rainier

High clouds made Mt. Rainier stand out in this view from Oak Harbor on January 6.

I was at Windjammer Park a few mornings ago and caught Mt. Rainier in the distance. The windmill was constructed in honor of the early island settlers of Dutch descent.

Mountains Around Oak Harbor, WA

From Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island, one can see two active volcanoes and two mountain ranges. To the east are the Cascade Mountains.

To the west are the Olympic Mountains.

To the northeast is Mt. Baker.

And to the southeast is Mt. Rainier.

Why would anyone want to live anywhere else? 

Polarized Mt. Rainier

One of the first things I do when I get a new camera or lens is buy a circular polarizing filter. Just like your polarized sunglasses, it filters out a particular orientation of light. These two photos were taken within seconds of each other but with the polarizing filter turned 90 degrees.

The molecules of the polarizing material are long and narrow, like bars on a jail window. Light with waves oriented vertically go right through. Reflected light waves oriented horizontally are stopped. (Polarized sunglasses cut down on reflected light, such as light reflected on other cars or the road surface.) This is one way photographers can bring out definition that is just not possible with a point and shoot camera.

This view is from a middle school in Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island, just after sunrise.

This photo was taken at dusk the same day from the west side of Oak Harbor.

The sky was overcast but Mt. Rainier was visible to the south.  The windmill is part of Windjammer Park and acknowledges the many of Dutch descent living in Oak Harbor.

Ft. Ebey State Park, Whidbey Island, Washington

The view of the Olympics at dusk from Ft. Ebey State Park.  This view is almost directly west.

Mt. Rainier was barely visible to the south.

There are great paths following the bluff.  If you venture on to Whidbey Island, be sure to take in the views from Ft. Ebey State Park.

Foggy Mt. Rainier Sunrise

To the south is Mt. Rainier. It is well south of Seattle so it is seen from the north part of Whidbey Island only on clear days. On this foggy morning,a fisherman heads out through Crescent Harbor.
